Improve the appearance of cellulite with these 5 methods.

If you have cellulite, you’re not alone. It affects 80% of women and 10% of men.

Before we go any further – what is cellulite? We know what it looks like, but what is it really? It’s dimpled skin that usually appears on the arms, stomach, thighs and buttocks which is a result of fat deposits pushing through the connective tissue beneath the skin. This creates that lumpy, dimpled effect which is caused by the bulging of cells.

What causes cellulite? It’s a combination of genetics, hormones, and lifestyle. Women are more susceptible to cellulite compared to men due to the difference in the structure of skin.
Although cellulite can’t be completely erased, here are some methods that will help reduce its appearance.

1) Healthy diet
A healthy diet plays a vital role in keeping cellulite at bay. Watch your sodium and sugar intake because food high in salt and sugar causes fat cells to swell, which makes cellulite more visible. Instead, load up on fibre, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Stay adequately hydrated by drinking lots of water, because a state of dehydration causes cellulite to look worse.

2) Regular exercise
The less fat you have on your body, the less cellulite appears. This is why it’s important to include exercise as part of your lifestyle. Add more cardio and strength training exercises, with a focus on your hips, legs and backside.

3) Massage troubled areas
A massage stimulates lymphatic drainage which helps eliminate toxins that accumulate in the layers of the fat, which can lead to inflammation and makes cellulite look worse. A massage isn’t only relaxing, it helps shift pockets of excess fluid that make up cellulite. Massaging cellulite breaks up the fluids beneath your skin and oxygenates the blood, leaving the area looking smoother and healthier.

4) Dry Brushing
It’s essentially a combination of exfoliation and massage that involves using a bristled dry brush and moving it over troubled spots in slow, circular motions. The bristles from the brush gives the skin a thorough exfoliation while the pressure stimulates blood circulation and lymphatic drainage which help the body eliminate toxins. The boost in circulation leaves skin looking plumped, healthy and radiant. Dry brush daily for best results.

5) Non-invasive treatments
For longer-lasting solutions, consider non-invasive treatments such as lasers, radiofrequency, wave therapy and endermologie which go beyond the skin. Although non-invasive treatments last longer, the results are not permanent and regular maintenance is required to keep the appearance of cellulite minimal.

DrSpa® Shape & Lift uses the Endermologie device to break down stubborn fats and smooth cellulite by stimulating the surface of the skin, while breaking down stubborn fat cells within to minimise the appearance of cellulite.

Although cellulite cannot be completely removed, these are some great options to help your skin look smoother and healthier.
